Healthy on-the-go thanks to Mason Jar

Only a few years ago, mason jars were pretty much strictly for canning. Now, most likely thanks to social media, they're really popular: they're convenient, decorative and versatile. These days, mason jars are used for numerous of things other than just canning. For example, they look awesome as a vase or candle holder! Obviously their main purpose is food storing: they're used to store nuts, muesli, juices, smoothies and even salads.

Over the last year I have been the mason jar queen; I absolutely love using these jars and I can't imagine life without them. They provide canning for beautiful portable, portion-control meals. If I've got a really early call-time or a busy day of castings, I just grab my jar out of the fridge which I prepared the night before. I use them for on-the-go salads, veggies with humus, oats, yoghurt and muesli... I simply put the jar in my bag without worrying it leaking into my bag.

Another reason why I love mason jars is because they're made of glass. Sure, glass is heavier than plastic, but I wouldn't consider these jars so heavy that they become a burden to transport. In my experience, my food stays fresh for much longer compared to storing it in a plastic container. It's probably because you get a better seal with a mason jar. Also, you don't have to mix up the components of your meal thanks to the canning jar adaptor. It separates the jar into two leakproof compartments. For instance, you can put your dressing into the canning jar adaptor and poor it over your salad right before eating it.

Writing this makes me crave for a freshly made smoothie! I just made this smoothie of spinach, a small piece of ginger, some water and one orange. I'll probably drink half of it now and bring the other half as a snack at my job tomorrow. Hmm!

*Mason jars are sometimes tricky to find. I purchased mine at masonjar.nl. You can also order them on Amazon.
